When it comes to other items such as roasts or ribs, you may find that the lid is a little too shallow and the cooking area is just a bit too small. But even understanding the reasons behind the weight portable bbq does not benefit this grill’s portability. Again, considering this grill against all other tabletop models in this review, the Q 1200 “packs down” to a less-than-reasonable 3.2 cubic-feet.
I’m not sure if the pan itself was just a fraction too big or if the grill’s legs were bent, but eventually, I ended up using a pair of snips to trim a few centimeters off either side of the tray. I was curious if this was a common issue with the grill, and after combing through hundreds of reviews, I couldn’t find any mention of other people having this problem. It seems like it was a one-off fluke, and honestly, the resolution was simple enough that it didn’t bother me too much. Weber has replacement drip pans available to purchase, as well as covers to help keep the grills protected from the elements. If you want a lighter grill that’s easier to transport, then the Q1200 might be the better option.
For instance, you could load it in the back of a pickup truck to take to a football tailgate and help out by grilling burgers, hot dogs, sausage, and bratwurst for you and a few friends. So, once again – if more portability and a lighter weight are top considerations for you, then the Q1200 would be the way to go. However, if you don’t mind the extra bulk and weight of a larger grill, then the Q2200 could be a viable option. It’s a great mid-range grill that’s great for home use but compact enough to take out about in certain circumstances.
Last, but certainly not least, we wish this model came with a latch to secure the lid. Though it doesn’t solve the issue, the cast aluminum lid is at least heavier than most, so it doesn’t bounce around much during normal travel. But if you’re planning on four-wheeling into your BBQ site, consider using a bungee cord to help secure it. Everything went smoothly until it came to the catch pan—because nothing can ever just be that easy, right?
The pan is made from lightweight metal and has a recessed area in the center to hold a disposable tin. It’s supposed to slide in underneath the grill body, but the pan that came with my grill portable bbq was the tiniest bit too big and wouldn’t slide into the grooves. I tried everything I could think of—rotating it, bending it, putting it in from the other side—and it simply wouldn’t fit.
The enameled cast iron cooking grates are easier to clean and distribute heat more efficiently. Unequivocally, the Weber Q 1200 is a fantastic portable grill, taking the top spot as our favorite. However, it is relatively expensive compared to other top models we tested. In particular, the Cuisinart Grillster produces a ton of power for a gas grill, and is offered at a phenomenal price. The infrared Solaire Everywhere also packs a punch for its size, and should be on the radar of any meat griller.
