Roomba I7+ From Irobot Proves Its Smarts

Its Roomba is synonymous with robot vacuum cleaners in the same way that Hoover is used instead of vacuuming. The home device learns your cleaning habits, and can suggest extra cleanings during peak pollen and pet-shedding seasons. The iRobot Roomba i3+ robot vacuum features the “Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal” system that empties your accumulated dirt into an enclosed bag. bissell crosswave cordless I started this robot cleaner journey with iRobot, the company that introduced the first such device way back in 2002. The “+” in the name refers to the automatic dirt disposal feature, but you can pick up an i7 without it for less. However, I would highly recommend the dirt disposal feature for reasons explained below, so I’d look to stretch to the + version if you can.

The Roomba i3+ EVO is usually the most affordable way to get a great self-emptying robot vacuum system. The only Roborock model that works with an auto-empty dock is the high-end Roborock S7+, which is quite expensive. The Roomba j7+, which has a lot of the same advanced navigation features as the Roborock, actually costs less than the S7 and dock combo. As for cleaning, we’ve found over and over again that basic Eufy bots are capable of picking up all the most common types of debris off bare floors and low-pile rugs. It’s actually kind of surprising how effective they are, since the advertised suction is so modest, and the single brush roll is small. If you have plush carpets and a lot of hair to deal with, though, you’ll want a robot with better brush action and possibly stronger suction.

Compared with earlier models, such as the 600 series, the i7+ has 10 times the suction power and it can hold up to 60 days’ worth of contents. Once it’s empty and charged, it will head out to clean some more until the job is done. The best Roomba vacuums offer enough suction power and smart capabilities to meet the needs of the users. Whether you’re looking for a crumb finder or a pet-hair attacker, the hands-on testing results of these robot vacuums can help shoppers pick the best Roomba for their needs. We tested these models in a home to see how they dealt with real dirt, pet hair, and debris as well as simulated dust and heavy crumbs to put the robot vacuums through their paces. In late May 2019, iRobot introduced the Roomba s9 and s9+ as the “smartest, most powerful robot vacuum yet”.

Here’s one of the technical drawings from iRobot’s original patent for the Roomba, showing a few of the other key components that you can’t see on the photo up above. I’ve colored and simplified it so it’s a little easier to understand.

The machine bumps around the floor like a slow-motion ping-pong ball, changing direction when it encounters an object or obstacle. As a result it took a long 91 minutes to finish its cleaning cycle in our test room. For a dependable, versatile, and affordable cleaner, we prefer a bagless upright, but dyson robot vacuum we have recommendations for other types of vacuums as well. We also tested the EcoVacs T8 AIVI, which did not avoid any objects. It just informed us in the app, after the session was over and the Nutella smeared everywhere, that there were many objects on our floor and that we should pick them up.

For its first few Csweepio built up a map, which Roomba calls Imprint Smart Mapping. This takes some time, and it can take several cleaning runs until it built up a full picture. IRobot says that you can speed things up by sending it out on mapping runs only, without cleaning, but I was happy for it to take its time and do both. While lidar powered units are reportedly quicker at this stage, unless you move home every week I can’t see how that matters in the long term, as, once it’s done, it’s done.

While all of them have the ability to respond to virtual wall barriers, the company offers an additional device called the Dual Mode Virtual Wall that can create the virtual barriers to fence in a Roomba. Many robot vacuums are now smart, letting you start a cleaning session from an app or by asking a smart speaker. Some, like the iRobot Roomba s9+ Robot Vacuum, let you block off entire rooms in an app, so you don’t have to worry about them dyson robot vacuum getting stuck on your kid’s clothing piles. A collection of smart sensors enhances the robot’s ability to maneuver obstacles and drive around furniture, as well as prevent it from accidentally tumbling down a flight of stairs. The robot vacuum will run up for up to 90 minutes before heading back to its charging station. All of this and more can be controlled via the iRobot Home App, where you’ll be able to easily schedule cleanings, too.

The main difference is that this unit doesn’t map specific areas, so it won’t be able to recognize different zones. We found that it still takes orders via the app, and will clean with the touch of a button. Depending on the model you are using, your robot cleaner can run a total of 60 to 120 minutes on a single charge. Roomba models that do not have the VSLM feature move in a random pattern. According to the company’s test lab, a unit with VSLM can clean up to 2,000 square feet on a 120-minute charge. Use Automations to connect to your smart devices and personalize your cleaning experience by scheduling your robot to clean when you leave the house.

Cameras and optical sensors can help with obstacle recognition, and LiDAR-based navigation uses lasers to detect objects. These capabilities aren’t perfect, but vacuums are now more adept at finding their way back to charging docks than they were even a few years ago. Another new feature is self-emptying bins, which suck the debris out of the robot and into a canister in the charging dock. For example, I have several radiators in my house with a 3.5-inch clearance that slim vacuums can get under, while just-slim-enough models sometimes get stuck, and too-thick models bump up against and go elsewhere. If you want your robot vacuum to get under your low-clearance furniture, make sure you choose a model that is slim enough to do so. Whereas some robot vacuums sense carpeting and boost suction, the i3+ EVO provides consistently strong suction, and when it detects excess dirt, it automatically performs multiple passes.
