It became the dominant manufacturer of American bicycles through most of the 20th century. After declaring bankruptcy in 1992, Schwinn has since been a sub-brand of Pacific Cycle, huffy mountain bike owned by the multi-national conglomerate, Dorel Industries. For more than 125 years, Schwinn has been giving people the joy and freedom to get out and enjoy the ride.
Employees reacted bitterly to the closing of Schwinn’s Chicago plants, some calling for a boycott of Schwinn products. It was the beginning of the end for Schwinn’s Chicago production, and gradually over the next three years the firm’s four Chicago plants were closed. Its bikes were durable because they were heavy, said Nick Page, owner of Schaumburg Cyclery in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg.
The new high-end children’s bicycle saw the Schwinn name become in high demand. Between 1900 and 1930, Schwinn would produce approximately 45,000 bicycles per year in a market where both changing tastes and the Depression saw many manufacturers close up shop for good. Involvement in the motorcycle industry helped keep the company alive, but after the stock market crash, the company, now under the guidance of Ignaz’ son Frank W., would once again turn its attention to bicycles.
You’ll notice that some of the costliest Schwinn beach cruisers are e-bike versions, which explains their high cost. There are not many options to choose from on either series, which makes the choices easier. Overall, you can get a low-end kid’s bike on either store from $79-$149 and up to $900 for the high-end option. The Schwinn Collegiate to be produced in Detroit is intended to reflect the leisurely aesthetic evoked by the 1965 version, says Ryan Birkicht, senior communications manager at Schwinn Bikes. A nod to the present is its eight-speed grip-shifter, an upgrade from the five-speed lever-shifter on the original. George McFly rode a Schwinn bicycle in 1955, which he probably bought at Hal’s Bike Shop.

By 1990, other United States bicycle companies with reputations for excellence in design such as Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale had cut further into Schwinn’s market. Unable to produce bicycles in the United States at a competitive cost, by the end of 1991 Schwinn was sourcing its bicycles from overseas manufacturers. This period in Schwinn’s history plays a cameo role in a novel by Dave Eggers, A Hologram for the King . Seeking to increase its brand recognition, Schwinn established additional company-operated shops, a move that alienated existing independent bike retailers in cities where the company stores had opened. This in turn led to further inroads by domestic and foreign competitors. Faced with a downward sales spiral, Schwinn went into bankruptcy in 1992.
