From its humble beginnings, pipe tobacco has come a long way, evolving into the rich and diverse product it is today. It has experienced its fair share of ups and downs, adapting and changing with the times, much like a phoenix emerging from the ashes. Cavendish is more a process of curing and a method of cutting tobacco than a type of it. The processing and the cut are used to bring out the natural sweet taste in the tobacco. FDA regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale, and distribution of pipe tobacco.
Pipe tobacco and cigarettes, both products of the tobacco industry, are vastly different when it comes to their impact on health. Some people point to a 1964 Surgeon General report about the health effects of smoking as evidence that people who smoke pipes live longer than cigarette smokers and nonsmokers. However, the report states that the number of deaths was a “little if at all higher” than for nonsmokers, meaning the number was similar — not lower — for pipe smokers. (A 1960s experiment with filtered cigarettes was deemed a failure.[4]) The blend is burley-based and remains one of America’s top-selling pipe tobaccos.
