A growing number of US teens and young adults were purchasing imported European sport racing or sport touring bicycles, many fitted with multiple derailleur-shifted gears. Schwinn decided to meet the challenge by developing two lines of sport or road ‘racer’ bicycles. One was already in the catalog — the limited production Paramount series. As always, the Paramount spared no expense; the bicycles were given high-quality lightweight lugged steel frames using double-butted tubes of Reynolds 531 and fitted with quality European components including Campagnolo derailleurs, hubs, and gears. The Paramount series had limited production numbers, making vintage examples quite rare today.

Explore the World offers lovely paths to follow but nothing that would help get me psyched to ride hard, while Zwift was way too complex for me. Instead, I downloaded Peloton, which offered a 90-day free trial during lockdown (it’s now down to 30 days).

Instead, most Schwinn derailleur bikes were marketed to the general leisure market, equipped with heavy “old timer” accessories such as kickstands that cycling aficionados had long since abandoned. While the Paramount still sold in limited numbers to this market, the model’s customer base began to age, changing from primarily bike racers to older, wealthier riders looking for the ultimate bicycle.
The new company produced a series of well-regarded mountain bikes bearing the Schwinn name, called the Homegrown series.[61] In 2001, Schwinn/GT declared bankruptcy. By 1990, other United States bicycle companies with reputations for excellence in design such as Trek, Specialized, mongoose bmx bike and Cannondale had cut further into Schwinn’s market. Unable to produce bicycles in the United States at a competitive cost, by the end of 1991 Schwinn was sourcing its bicycles from overseas manufacturers. This in turn led to further inroads by domestic and foreign competitors.
While the bike doesn’t have Bluetooth and can’t connect to apps directly, you can still follow along with the Peloton app for an excellent workout. Although I’ve now built up the stamina to do a 60-minute class, I often opt for a high-energy 30-minute class and supplement it with a 20-minute strength class and a 10-minute core class from the app. If I’m short on time (or motivation), I’ll hop on the bike for a quick 15- or 20-minute ride.
Schwinn was born in Baden, Germany and moved to Chicago in 1891, attracted by the opportunities surrounding the Columbian Exposition. After working for bicycle manufacturer Hill & Moffat, and a brief stint designing bicycles for the International mongoose bmx bike Manufacturing Company, Schwinn teamed up with Adolph Arnold to open his own company, Arnold, Schwinn, & Co. Around the 1971 model year, the Super Sport began to look even more like the flash-welded Continental below it in the Schwinn lineup.
