Although some models are known for consistent cooking across the entire air fryer basket, you still shouldn’t skip this important step. Air fryers are an entirely different beast than the countertop oil fryers you may have bought in the past. Instead of immersing baskets of your food in hot oil (which can splash out of the basket and burn you and requires heavy-duty cleanup), air fryers use a very small amount of oil to crisp your food. A light spritzing from an oil spray bottle should be all you need.
Bacon cooked on air fry was one of my favorite results in testing. It was crispy and the design of the slotted baking tray allows grease to drip through to a foil-lined crumb tray below, making cleanup nice and easy. The reheat function serves as a basic replacement for your microwave. It warmed up my macaroni and cheese lunch with ease, instant pot duo nova but there is one restriction. You won’t be able to adjust the temperature for your reheat cycle, only the time.
The digital display on the Instant Vortex Plus shows the temperature once it’s preheated. It has a compact design, a stainless-steel front and an easy-to-navigate touchscreen panel up top. Release a latch inside the frame, and you can remove the door for cleaning. The Instant Pot has a devoted fan base and its maker, Instant Brands, has a line of small kitchen appliances that’s expanded over the years to include more than just pressure cookers. We’ve seen the company release an immersion circulator, a blender and multicookers. If you’re an air-fryer skeptic, maybe this on-sale model — marked down from $130 to only $90 — will change your mind.
In theory the replacement filters can be bought directly at Instant Brands’ site, but they are not yet available for purchase. The brand reports that they’ll be in stock soon, but the air fryer does come with two filters included. This is encouraging, because you can find many replacements and added parts for a number of the best Instant Pots on this same site. Yes, it has a function known as auto-turn off which means it’s always on a timer. When the timer runs out, it says “End” and then turns itself off.
We enjoyed using this machine as a multicooker, achieving great pressure-cooked and slow-cooked beef stew and baked beans. This flip-top model had an interface with buttons that were intuitive to use. It had an exposed heating element on the inside of the lid, making us a little nervous we’d bump it and get burned. It had a small capacity, only fitting one 15-ounce bag of french fries or two chicken cutlets at a time.
