By the late 1970s, a new bicycle sport begun by enthusiasts in Northern California had grown into a new type of all-terrain bicycle, the mountain bike. Mountain bikes were originally based on Schwinn balloon-tired cruiser bicycles fitted with derailleur gears and called “Klunkers”. A few participants began designing and building small numbers of mountain bikes with frames made out of modern butted chrome-molybdenum alloy steel. When the sport’s original inventors demonstrated their new frame design, Schwinn marketing personnel initially discounted the growing popularity of the mountain bike, concluding that it would become a short-lived fad. The company briefly (1978–1979) produced a bicycle styled after the California mountain bikes, the Klunker 5.

This policy was the same whether distribution took the form of the so-called Schwinn Plan deliveries to retailers or agency and consignment arrangements, or whether it took the form of sales by Schwinn to wholesalers and resale by them to retailers. The record shows that this policy was implemented largely through request and persuasion by Schwinn. We agree, and, upon remand, the decree should be revised to enjoin any limitation upon the freedom of distributors to dispose of the Schwinn products, which they have bought from Schwinn, where and to whomever they choose. It is within these boundary lines that we must analyze the present case.

Not all vintage Schwinns have serial numbers or follow a set convention for placement and numbering. If there is a serial number, it will always appear on the actual frame of the bike, rather than on a removable part like the seat, handlebars, or wheels. Most Schwinn bikes will feature a head badge or plate that identifies them as a Schwinn. This badge varied in style, depending on the style of bike and the year it was made.

In the 70’s, Soutern California kids started following new trends , just like the kids created the Sting-Ray culture during the sixties. This time, however, Schwinn decided not to engage into the movement, maily because the company saw the sport as too dangerous and unsuitable with Schwinn’s quality image. The same happened with the mountain-bike culture of the 80’s pioneered mongoose bmx bike by Northern California riders like Michael Sinyard , Tom Ritchey and Gary Fisher. What Schwinn didn’t recognize is that trends are often set by minority thinkers, and not by the Number One. To many economists, this is how things should work, with efficiencies making products cheaper and creating new opportunities at the high end — in building satellites, if not in bicycles.

The company’s next answer to requests for a Schwinn mountain bike was the King Sting and the Sidewinder, inexpensive BMX-derived bicycles fabricated from existing electro-forged frame designs, and using off-the-shelf BMX parts. Centuries ago, it could perhaps be assumed that a manufacturer had no legitimate interest in what happened to his products once he had sold them to a middleman and they had started their way down the channel of distribution. But this assumption no longer holds true in a day of sophisticated marketing policies, mass advertising, and vertically integrated manufacturer-distributors. [Footnote 2/15] Restrictions like those involved in a franchising program should accordingly be able to claim justification under the ancillary restraints doctrine. If you are looking for a Schwinn bike for sale for your children, then you will find many choices. They make a series of sidewalk bikes, including the Spitfire and Pixie, that are only 12 inches tall.

At this time, very few of the bicycles being produced byGiantbore their own brand name. In a bid to rectify this Tony Lo – one of King Liu’s business partners – began a campaign for brand recognition. In 1986 theGiant Bikesbranded bicycles were introduced into the European marketplace. In 1977, the partners managed to secure an order from the great American bicycle company,Schwinn. When Giant’s first batch of good qualitySchwinnten-speed bikes rolled off the assembly line, the company’s future looked assured. As the parent company of such legendary brands as Schwinn, Mongooseand Kid Trax, Pacific Cycle delivers some of the biggest names in outdoor recreation.

The Sting-Ray had ape-hanger handlebars, Persons’s Solo Polo Seat banana seat, and 20-inch tires. Sales were initially slow, as many parents desiring a bicycle for their children schwinn bicycles did not relate to the new, unconventional design. After a few appeared on America’s streets and neighborhoods, many young riders would accept nothing else, and sales took off.

Later, Schwinn would sign a production supply agreement with Giant Bicycles of Taiwan. As time passed, Schwinn would import more and more Asian-made bicycles to carry the Schwinn brand, eventually becoming more a marketer than a maker of bikes. In 1978 production of the fillet-brazed Superior stopped, which marked the end of production for a fine Schwinn frameset whose basic design had been in service since 1938.

In the December 1963 Schwinn Reporter, Schwinn announced the arrival of the Deluxe Sting-Ray. This model included Fenders, white-wall tires, and a padded Solo polo seat.
