Weber Q1200 Review: Portable Beauty or a Overweight Beast?

Ideal for cooking hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken, steaks, and veggies. When it comes to other items such as roasts or ribs, you may find that the lid is a little too shallow and the cooking area is just a bit too small. The 2200 has the same features as the Q 2000, but also has the additional feature of the built-in thermometer. This isn’t the typical Weber Q experience, but the regulators can be problematic.

The grill grates are the toughest part to clean, but they are small enough that they will fit in a dish tub to soak when you’re away from home. There is also a very durable porcelain coating covering the grates. Preheating is a requirement because if the grates aren’t hot, your food could bake right on.

We weigh everything that goes into our RV and our Q1200 is a bit less than 23 lbs without the propane bottle. The weight that everyone seems to quote in their reviews is lbs and that is the shipping weight, not the actual weight of the grill. As I mentioned earlier, the materials used to make all the main parts are either cast aluminum, weber charcoal grill stainless steel, or glass-reinforced nylon. All of these materials will hold up exceptionally well in most situations, given that the grill is stored correctly when not in use. By that, I mean, don’t leave it outside in the elements and expect it to look pretty in five years. From there, it was simply a matter of checking the drip pan.

If you would prefer to connect a much more economical and refillable 20lb propane cylinder, Weber makes an accessory adapter and hose that will do that. There is also an aftermarket kit that will let you convert a Q grill to use your RV’s low-pressure quick-disconnect line. Cleaning is never fun, but the Weber Q grills are much easier to clean than most other portable grills on the market. Everything went smoothly until it came to the catch pan—because nothing can ever just be that easy, right? The pan is made from lightweight metal and has a recessed area in the center to hold a disposable tin.

The other common problem noted was from people who found it difficult to attach a 16oz propane cylinder, which I mentioned in the Quality section of this review. I’ve read several accounts from owners stating that the grill runs hot regardless of the burner control setting. In contrast, others say the regulator is bad right out of the box. I am not technical enough to know if these problems stem from the same issue, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they are. If you find that the weber genesis 21200 is running hot on the first run, give it some time before assuming there’s a problem. The manual leads me to believe that it’s normal for the grill to run hot for its first few uses.

Since then Weber, like many others, has outsourced manufacturing of more product lines.

In the weeks that I used it, the disposable tray only needed to be emptied once, and I simply lined it with heavy-duty aluminum foil as a makeshift tray. However, if you prefer the perfect fit of Weber’s disposable tin trays , you can get replacements for quite cheap. It just so happened that while I was testing the grill, my boyfriend had an off-site event at work. Using the grill, he was able to cook easily for himself and four coworkers, and they all agreed that the burgers and hot dogs came out great. Like a kid on Christmas, I couldn’t help but try out the Weber Q 2200 the day I got it.

This model also has a Grill Out handle light, which illuminates your grill for nighttime cooking. This grill is the only Weber Q that can be bought as a natural gas grill model instead of a propane gas grill only. It can also be hooked up to a 20-pound propane tank. The Weber Q portable gas grill was invented when Weber realized that many people were moving into the city where they wouldn’t have large backyards.

If it passes the break-in period without improving, then give Weber a call. They will likely replace your regulator free of charge. A stainless steel Q-shaped burner tube produces 8,500 BTUs of heat, which the grill efficiently and evenly disperses across the entire grill surface. It takes minutes to preheat thoroughly, but it must be preheated with the lid down. The grill surface is roughly 12½″ front to back and 16¾″ side to side at its widest points.
