Weber Q1200 Review: Portable Beauty or a Overweight Beast?

Beyond size, the rest of the features remain the same as found in the Q1000 series. The Q2200 offers a built-in thermometer weber charcoal grill in the hood and electronic ignition. The Q2000 comes with the standard push-button ignition and no thermometer.

This model also has a Grill Out handle light, which illuminates your grill for nighttime cooking. This grill is the only weber charcoal grill that can be bought as a natural gas grill model instead of a propane gas grill only. It can also be hooked up to a 20-pound propane tank. The Weber Q portable gas grill was invented when Weber realized that many people were moving into the city where they wouldn’t have large backyards.

We weigh everything that goes into our RV and our Q1200 is a bit less than 23 lbs without the propane bottle. The weight that everyone seems to quote in their reviews is lbs and that is the shipping weight, not the actual weight of the grill. As I mentioned earlier, the materials used to make all the main parts are either cast aluminum, stainless steel, or glass-reinforced nylon. All of these materials will hold up exceptionally well in most situations, given that the grill is stored correctly when not in use. By that, I mean, don’t leave it outside in the elements and expect it to look pretty in five years. From there, it was simply a matter of checking the drip pan.

These small cookers make travel easy, but obviously limit the amount and size of what can be cooked. They may be used as a table top grill or mounted to a fold out stand with two legs, two wheels and tool hooks.

Everything else (I’m assuming fasteners, hardware, and thermometer) is protected by warranty for two years. The heavy-duty cast-iron grates have a tough porcelain coating. The essential parts – the grill box, lid, and grill grates – are composed of cast aluminum. Nylon reinforced with glass – in a fiberglass kind of way, I assume – is heat resistant and durable. Even as a seasoned BBQ cook, I am still excited by the electronic ignition on this gas grill. If you have ever tried to manually start a fire, even on an electric grill, then you know what a hassle it can be.

The other common problem noted was from people who found it difficult to attach a 16oz propane cylinder, which I mentioned in the Quality section of this review. I’ve read several accounts from owners stating that the grill runs hot regardless of the burner control setting. In contrast, others say the regulator is bad right out of the box. I am not technical enough to know if these problems stem from the same issue, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they are. If you find that the 1200 is running hot on the first run, give it some time before assuming there’s a problem. The manual leads me to believe that it’s normal for the grill to run hot for its first few uses.

Speaking of weight, one of the few negative things that I do have to say about the Weber Q 2200 is regarding how heavy it is. For a portable gas grill, it can be quite heavy, making it difficult to lug around, particularly on its own. Lastly, the Q3200 includes a significant feature that none of the other grills have. The Q3200 is the only grill out of the Weber Q Series with a warming rack, something rarely seen in my reviews.
