As long as it is hooked up to enough propane gas, it is able to produce a good amount of heat. This model, in particular, does a great job of reaching higher temperatures. I also like the side tables – they are high quality and are perfectly designed to hold food.
During the summer, I grill out most days, so this grill will get a good workout. This is the 2nd Weber Q 1200 gas grill that I have had and I am extremely satisfied with its performance. Someone must have like my first one also as it was stolen. The Q Series grills are made from cast aluminum and heavy duty plastic which makes them immune to rust when used in coastal areas and near swimming pools. The Weber Traveler is a new portable gas grill that is a legitimate alternative to the Weber Q series.
But behind that weight, you have a glass-reinforced nylon frame, supporting a cast aluminum body and lid, that cover a porcelain-enameled cast iron cook surface. All of these are heavy-duty, making the Q 1200 sturdy, durable, weber charcoal grill and likely to last a very long time. The core aspects of these two grills are nearly identical. Both types of grills feature a burner that wraps around the underneath a set of heavy duty cast iron cooking grates.
Unequivocally, the weber genesis 2 1200 is a fantastic portable grill, taking the top spot as our favorite. Ease of use and cooking performance are supported by durability, making it a reliable option for even the longest of road trips. Even though its weight may keep you from carrying it into more remote locations, that job is best left to backpacking stoves anyway.
There is a griddle plate available that will turn half of your grill into a griddle. It’s great for those who like to cook breakfast or want to whip up some caramelized onions or bacon for burgers. However, Weber warns that only one griddle plate can be used at a time, as using two will likely cut off airflow to the burner, kill the flames and cause a propane buildup. There is also a very durable porcelain coating covering the grates.
The Traveler is large, but highly portable, and packs serious searing power. But even understanding the reasons behind the weight does not benefit this grill’s portability. Again, considering this grill against all other tabletop models in this review, the Q 1200 “packs down” to a less-than-reasonable 3.2 cubic-feet. We put that phrase in quotations because weber charcoal grill the only thing that packs away are the side tables, which do conveniently fold up securely underneath the lid. Purchased at bjs problem is the 16 oz propane cans do not fit without forcing the regulator to the side because the can is forced sideways by the handle. I have seen this complaint in other reviews WEBER needs to get off their arse and fix this.
This means that the burner doesn’t need to crank out heat at nearly the same rate as other, less well-insulated grills. It seems that the handle above the regulator is not quite in the right spot, and it can be challenging to attach a 16.4oz propane bottle to it. Weber suggests lifting the grill up by the right side handle to connect the cylinder at a bit of an angle. Modifying the handle by grinding or filing out a bit for extra clearance will void your warranty. While wind can be a factor, it’s pretty easy to work around.
The manual leads me to believe that it’s normal for the grill to run hot for its first few uses. If it passes the break-in period without improving, then give Weber a call. They will likely replace your regulator free of charge. The grill grates are the toughest part to clean, but they are small enough that they will fit in a dish tub to soak when you’re away from home. It’s a terrible idea to use a wire brush on them because of their porcelain coating, but if you do use this grill at home, keep in mind that the grates are dishwasher safe.
One of the major selling points of this grill is its two fold-out side tables, which are each 12.5 x 13.5 inches. They’re the perfect spot to place a plate, condiments, and grilling tools, and I used them pretty much every time I grilled.
