All robot vacuums employ bumpers and sensors to help them navigate their way around your home and to prevent them coming to grief by falling down the stairs. But some are more efficient at finding their way around than others. Dyson may introduce its 360 Heurist robot vacuum to the United States. The Verge spotted filings with the FCC that show a robovac of a similar, but a slightly different design that could be more suitable to U.S. households than the European model. This robot vac doubles as a mop, and thanks to its manual controls can get to work almost as soon as you open its box. It cleaned well and quickly too – covering our test room in just under 18 minutes. Plus its sensor system worked effectively, meaning that even when it bumped into furniture, it was able to navigate away without assistance. Its metallic blue casing looks slick, while ensuring that the vacuum is easy to spot. We loved the headlights on this robot’s 360° camera – these were effective at lighting the way when the robot went into the dark corners and under furniture.
The Dyson has a drop sensor to prevent it from falling off ledges or tumbling down stairs. While dark colors on carpet or tile flooring can confuse the sensors, it is less likely to avoid false drops like the Roomba 980 is prone to do. If you happen to rearrange your furniture or add new obstacles, the Roomba 980 will probably bump into them once. Dyson claims the Heurist has twice the suction power of any robot cleaner and while I don’t agree that’s entirely true, we will agree that it does suck big time – and, with vacuum cleaners, that’s bissell crosswave cordless a good thing. Given they are unlikely to obstruct or obfuscate a roaming robot vacuum, the majority of these types of cleaners tout their abilities to tackle hard floors. Using whatever navigation system they have, whether it’s automatic smart navigation or via boundary strips, the majority of robot vacuum cleaners on this list are fine with hard floors.
