The thing I liked most about the old one was the slow speed variable control for going around fences and flowers. If I knew the new model was not as capable when it comes to variable speed would probably not have purchased it. I have owned three gas powered string trimmers in my life, and being very frustrated with the last one I ventured to purchase this new electric Ego Power string trimmer. It makes much less noise, starts immediately with a press of a button and no struggling with a choke and pulling a start cord. It’s much lighter than my gas trimmer, and has MORE power, and the auto feed of the string line is a blessing and saves me a lot of time .
Just the “low” setting is more than enough to get the job done. We put the 56v EGO String trimmer in the hands of a lawncare pro, and we also put it to work in the forest behind our shop. This unit is definitely not lacking in power, and it’s pretty light too. The knee and waist-high weeds and grass did not seem to bother the EGO. We like that they’ve spec’d this unit to run with typical commercial-grade 0.095″ trimmer line.
The String Trimmer has what EGO calls POWERLOAD. It’s a silly term for a welcome and cool feature. To load string into the trimmer, all you need to do is cut the length of string you need (for me, it’s a little over two outstretched arm’s length—not very precise). Then just feed one end into and through the trimmer head. Pull the string through until you have equal lengths coming out of both sides of the trim head. Lightly hold the string creating a tiny bit of tension.
I have 2 batteries, so it’s not as big an issue for me, but extra batteries are expensive. Keep in mind that EGO’s batteries will fit all of their products, so if you have more than one EGO tool, the ability to swap batteries is a big plus. As the string becomes too short, just tap the head on a hard surface and the line will feed out automatically.
You simply feed the line through the trimmer head to its halfway point, press the self-feed button, and let go when the line gets to a usable length. I bought into the Ego system with an older string trimmer, the blower and the chain saw. I do wish the runtime on the blower were longer even with the 5.0Ah battery that came with the chain saw. The only negative experience I’ve had is when I broke the trigger on the string trimmer.

Ego sells larger batteries for longer jobs, as well as a rapid charger, and these are pricey, especially if you’re not committed to the Ego line of tools.
