The reasonably priced M7 Pro comes with a physical remote and offers an impressive set of smart features, including scheduling, area cleaning, virtual boundaries, and Alexa voice control. IRobot is one of the most respected names in the robot vacuum market, and the Roomba i3+ EVO is its most affordable model with a self-emptying dyson robot vacuum dustbin. Beyond offering greater convenience than their more manual counterparts, self-emptying robot vacuums significantly limit your exposure to dust, a big plus if you suffer from allergies. It also features a self-emptying dustbin, good battery life, impressive obstacle avoidance, and strong vacuum suction power.
It’s not a regular occurrence, mind, because in most instances it cleverly switches off the rollers as soon as it detects resistance. It then slowly works its way over the ruffled edge before turning the rollers on again and continuing irobot vacuum cleaner with the cleaning session. The higher-end models like the j7, i7 and s9 will also completely map the home and provide the wherewithal to divide rooms and even create no-go zones using the excellent iRobot app’s pinch-and-zoom facility.
A horizontally mounted “side spinner” brush on the right side of the unit sweeps against walls to reach debris not accessible by the main brushes and vacuum. In the first generation, the dirty air passes through the fan before reaching the filter, while later models use a fan-bypass vacuum. The Roombas’ bumper allows them to sense when they have bumped into an obstacle, after which they will reverse or change paths.
It also has four times more raw suction than the already-strong Roomba i3 EVO, i7, or j7. That helps it consistently pick up larger debris like cat litter or yard waste better than most robots, though it still doesn’t come close to deep-cleaning dust from a rug like a traditional vacuum. We don’t like the s9 because it’s one of the clumsiest navigators we’ve tested. It’s like the developers left in a bunch of code that makes it think it’s still round. We watched it stubbornly try to shove itself into spaces where it obviously couldn’t fit, roughing up some furniture in the process.
It can run for up to 90 minutes before automatically recharging, but it will need to be reset before its next run. Through the company’s Imprint Link technology, the iRobot Roomba i3 coordinates with the bissell crosswave cordless Braava Jet M6 robot mop so users can vacuum and then mop in sequence. When it’s running low on battery—after about 75 minutes of runtime—the Roomba will automatically recharge and then resume cleaning.
Floors cluttered with obstacles like wires, charging cords, toys, shoes and clothing can stop robots in their tracks.
