The Phantom 4, as mentioned, has a 1/2.3-inch camera sensor, the newer drones in the Phantom line come with a full 1-inch sensor. This new sensor has a mechanical shutter, captures 20 MP images and bumps the maximum video bitrate from 60 to 100 Mbps. The RTK module is integrated directly into the DJI Phantom 4 RTK, providing real-time positioning data for improved absolute accuracy on image metadata.
Drones are amazing pieces of equipment but they race through batteries. In real-world conditions we get around minutes from a Phantom 4 battery, which means you’re going to need multiple if you’re planning a reasonable amount of shooting each day. We find that the sweetspot is 3 batteries as you can fit them easily within the standard Phantom 4 case for easy transportation and it won’t cost you a fortune.
Whilst you’re flying, the DJI Go app puts the dji mini 2 fly more combo’s main functionality only a tap away. It’s not the most user friendly set up, with several buttons taking you to the same menu, but I soon got used to it. The mapping functionality of the Phantom 4 quadcopter is also amazing. I loved the ability to see on a Google map exactly where the drone was located. Selecting a section of your video footage using the DJI Go app is simple and fast.
Sensors, Chargers, remote controls, batteries and optional extra accessories. In a rural environment I flew the drone 4,250 feet away from my position before getting any sort of choppiness in the live video feed, at which point I turned it around and brought it home. In a suburban setting, crowded with homes and Wi-Fi signals, the Phantom flew 2,600 feet away from the launch point before the video signal became spotty. Both figures are in line with our Phantom 4 tests—it flew 4,500 feet in a rural test spot and 1,800 feet in suburbia before the video signal began to cut out. The only drone that’s done better in our rural test is DJI’s tiny Mavic Pro, which flew a full mile away from launch without a stutter—I didn’t try to fly it any further than that.
We all know that there is more to a camera than just a pixel count, which is why you shouldn’t shrug off the fact that the camera is identical on the spec sheet. ActiveTrack will work down to 6ft above the ground when the aircraft is switched to P mode. Tap the Stop button on the left of the screen to exit ActiveTrack. At this point you may choose to start a new mission or bring the aircraft back to the Home Point. Phantom 4 can fly up to 44.7mph in Sport Mode while in ATTI Mode it can fly up to 35.8mph. Phantom 4 will use GPS/Glonass and its Vision Positioning System to achieve precision while hovering.
Additional batteries can certainly improve the ability to map even bigger areas, however in this case the focus was on the quality of acquired data. For a long time, DJI’s Phantom was lacking autopilot features that almost all other camera drones offered, such as follow mode and smart camera tools. The company did add them in the end, but now it’s running with it.
DJI’s decision to not only stop selling the Phantom 4 Pro but also stop supporting the drone during this time absolutely destroyed the resale value. Mine has been sitting in a hard case collecting dust because nobody wanted to buy a drone they couldn’t get batteries for or get support from DJI. I merely stated that it was when I realized that the U.S.A. security agencies’ concerns about using Chinese made DJI drones were in fact well founded. After doing further research, I’ve learned there’s much more to it, and much more reason for other governments or people who don’t wish to abide by China’s wishes should not buy DJI. I thought a phone was needed to control the drone along with the controller.
Samll things I didn’t like included the rubber battery port cover, which I found too fiddly, and the choice of rubber used for the grip elements, which I can see getting dirty very quickly. There are also 2 customisable buttons on the base of the controller within easy reach. The camera and gimble are obviously more fragile, and require a protective guard to be used when transporting the drone.
